**MELVINDALE, Mich.** — Four Melvindale athletes were recognized as Athletes of the Week for Sept. 21–27 after standout performances and leadership across the Cardinals’ soccer, cross country and sideline cheer programs. **Hamzah Yahya, Varsity Soccer** Yahya helped lead the Melvindale boys soccer team through a memorable week, including a major victory over Grosse Ile, which was ranked No. 7 in Michigan at the time. Yahya scored the game-winning goal in the victory, continuing a strong stretch of play for the Cardinals. Beyond his performance on the field, Yahya has established himself as a dependable teammate who arrives at every practice and game ready to compete. His consistent effort and willingness to help his teammates have made him an important part of the Cardinals’ success. **Breyanah Baldridge, Varsity Cross Country** Baldridge was recognized for her leadership both on and off the course. As a team captain, she consistently sets a strong example through her work ethic while encouraging and supporting her teammates. Her leadership extends beyond the varsity team, as she also takes time to mentor younger runners and help build a positive team culture within the Melvindale cross country program. **Skylar Irving, Varsity Sideline Cheer** Irving earned recognition for her reliability, dedication and positive attitude. Throughout the week, she handled unexpected changes with determination and remained focused on helping the team succeed. Her willingness to adapt, continue improving and showcase her skills has made her a valuable member of the Cardinals’ sideline cheer program. **Nasser Ali, JV Soccer** Ali had an impressive week on the soccer field, contributing at both the junior varsity and varsity levels. He helped the varsity team record a clean sheet against Grosse Ile before returning to the scoresheet by scoring the game-winning goal against Detroit Catholic Central. His ability to contribute in important moments has made Ali a key player for the Cardinals and highlighted the depth within the Melvindale soccer program.
